Outrigger Canoe (Yap)

Ancestral Seafaring Technology with Cultural Pride

Outer islanders of Yap and Chuuk still build their outrigger canoes and sail between islands without modern instruments, using stars, sun, currents, winds, and other living creatures, which were passed down from their ancestors for thousands of years.

Why It Matters :
This is one of the very few areas that they still practice traditional navigation in the Pacific.
Amazing Fact :
In 1975, six Yapese outer islands from Satawal sailed to Okinawa (for 3,000 km) on Chechemeni (this canoe is now on display at the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka).
Modern Appeal :
Traditional canoe building and navigation became UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021.
